Artist’s Statement – Sue Stephenson

By way of background, originally from the UK I went to Bermuda in 1983 as an Executive Secretary at the age of 25 but had always been interested in Art and painting although I do not have any formal training. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful colours of the Island and the shoreline. I started dabbling in pastels and later moved on to oils, under the guidance of a local artist. Maria Smith.

After a few years, some of her students branched off and painted regularly on their own. I have been painting  ever since, moving from oils to acrylics painting anything from beach and ocean to abstract.

During my years in Bermuda, I was fortunate enough to have had four major shows in the main artp gallery, The Bermuda Society of Arts, as well as exhibiting in other galleries around the Island and coffee shops and also doing commissions. This was whilst holding down a full-time job!

After 42 years in Bermuda, I have now retired from the workforce and moved to the Isle of Wight. I hope now to be able to devote more time to painting and to capture the beauty of the Island in some of my works as well as continuing with my abstracts.
