The Royal Isle of Wight County Show
Saturday, 13th July
Sunday, 14th July
This event actually ‘amused’ Queen Victoria, who would visit the Agricultural Show as it was then known. The Queen was a regular visitor and actually exhibited sheep. Donated silver cups from the Queen are still used today. Queen Victoria became the first patron of the event and gave it Royal title, which makes the Royal Isle of Wight County Show one of just seven such events in the UK. In 1889, the Queen wrote in her journal:
“The prize beasts were brought round for me to inspect, and after that, we saw horses jumping.”
The event is still going strong all these years later and is organised by the Royal Agricutural Society. Any money raised isupports young people on the Island who want to learn agricultural skills. You can find out more about our Rural Careers Fund here.
